Critical Safety Notice
SONAFONE DOES NOT SUPPORT 911 OR ANY EMERGENCY SERVICE CALLS. DO NOT RELY ON SONAFONE FOR EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS.
This is a required disclosure pursuant to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations regarding Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services.
Understanding This Limitation
What This Means
Sonafone is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service that operates differently from traditional telephone service. Due to the nature of our technology:
- You CANNOT dial 911 through Sonafone
- You CANNOT reach emergency services (police, fire, ambulance) through our Service
- Emergency calls will NOT be completed even if attempted
- No location information can be transmitted to emergency responders
Why 911 Is Not Available
Sonafone uses WebRTC technology to route calls through the internet to the public telephone network via Twilio's infrastructure. This architecture does not support:
- Emergency Call Routing: Our system is not connected to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs)
- Location Identification: We cannot determine or transmit your physical location to emergency services
- E911 Database Integration: We are not integrated with emergency service databases
- Carrier-Level Emergency Infrastructure: As a web-based service, we lack the carrier agreements necessary for 911 connectivity
Your Responsibilities
By using Sonafone, you acknowledge and agree to the following:
Maintain Alternative Emergency Access
You MUST ensure you have an alternative means of contacting emergency services at all times. This may include:
- A traditional landline telephone
- A mobile/cellular phone with active service
- Access to a neighbor's phone or public phone
- A separate VoIP service that supports E911
Inform Others
You agree to:
- Inform all persons who may use your device that 911 is NOT available through Sonafone
- Post a notice near any device used for Sonafone stating that emergency calls cannot be made
- Ensure children and guests are aware of this limitation
Know Your Local Emergency Numbers
Familiarize yourself with alternative ways to reach emergency services:
- Local police department direct line
- Local fire department direct line
- Local hospital emergency room
- Poison control center: 1-800-222-1222
- National emergency management resources
What Happens If You Attempt 911
If you attempt to dial 911 or other emergency numbers through Sonafone:
- The call will be blocked - Our system prevents emergency number dialing
- You will see an error message - The Service will notify you that emergency calls are not supported
- No connection will be made - Your call will not reach any emergency service
- No notification to PSAPs - Emergency services will not be alerted
DO NOT TEST THIS. In an emergency, every second counts. Use a proper emergency-capable phone.
Emergency Numbers Blocked
Sonafone blocks calls to the following emergency numbers and patterns:
| Region | Numbers Blocked |
|---|---|
| United States/Canada | 911 |
